Grapes were first introduced into the Paso Robles area by Spanish missionaries with the founding of Mission San Miguel.
We earned our reputation as “California’s oldest watering place” with visitors flocking to the hot mineral spring bath houses fueled by the Iron Spring and Sand Spring.
Paso’s first commercial winery was established at the top of what is today York Mountain Road.
After the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad, El Paso de Robles was incorporated as a city and the building of a city center begins.
The city of Paso Robles grew to accommodate new residents, drawn to the area because of its burgeoning wine industry.
The Paso Robles AVA was established, helping the wine industry grow from 20 to 200+ wineries and 40,000 acres planted today.
The Paso Robles AVA was petitioned to establish 11 sub-AVAs, or “districts,” to add further distinction to the area’s growing wine industry.
Iron + Sand bottled our first wine, a 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the El Pomar and San Miguel districts of Paso Robles.
